New weapon against grain pests

UK cereal growers and merchants eager to protect critical grain quality this harvest now have access to a new product with proven defence against a range of grain storage pests following the approval of Talisma EC from Arysta LifeScience.

The new product, which contains 80g/litre cypermethrin + 228g/litre Piperonyl butoxide in an emulsifiable concentrate formulation (EC),or Ultra low volume formulation ( ULV) is already approved in Europe where it has shown excellent control of key Coleoptera, Lepidoptera and mite species (see below).

Talisma EC can be used preventatively to treat grain stores ahead of harvest giving up to 3 months preventative control, or as a direct admixture to give curative control for up to three months in infested stored grains. In either case, the product has low residue levels meaning no withholding period is required.

Arysta LifeScience trials have found that Talisma gives comparable or slightly better efficacy in a range of situations when compared against alternatives such as, chlorpyrifos-methyl, deltamethrin.

When used ahead of harvest, Arysta LifeScience recommends applying Talisma to cleaned store surfaces three to four weeks before filling with grain. For best results a dilution of 0.6 litres of product in 50 litres water should be applied as a medium to coarse spray using a knapsack sprayer or spray lance – this will cover 100m2. The product can also be used to treat grain entering storage via a conveyor system.
